well, the i.r.c. doesn't help with assistance dog funding, so we have to look elsewhere for help. taz's worker gave me a place to start and my net friend sent a couple of suggestions as well. let's all hope we find someone who helps with this kind of thing. i don't know when we'll be able to get one if we don't.

well, first of all, new site url and new design! if you link to i&i, please change the url. the redirect page probably won't remain on my site for too long. and, btw, the new site also finally incliudes all my old links for disabilities and parenting. just click on links up top. :) now i just need to get the kid his own guestbook. ;)
for the last few weeks we've been talking about the possibility of getting taz a service dog. this was actually suggested by a friend who helps and advises about service animals. she told us that there is a type of service animal called a SsigDog trained to help autistics (you can find info on service dogs on the service dogs pages of her site). my concern has been cost (and it still is, but to a smaller degree). i seem to remember seeing eye and similar animals being very expensive and the training being very expensive. then, a few days ago, my ex managed to run into a friend of his and it turns out she trains assistance animals. so we went to a training session last night to check things out.
from everything we;ve seen, it looks like this dog thing might be a good idea AND be somewhat affordable if i can get help from i.r.c. the lady, debra, is apparently the only person locally that trains up to the levels she does and is as affordable. she even helps find the right animal for the person who needs it.
there are still some things we have to work out and some concerns we have: the school's reaction, the fact the the housing people may try to claim the dog is a pet and force us to get rid of out cat plus charge us extra to get the dog into the apartment. fortunately the allergy things is apparently manageable, so that's one less worry. saxy pointed out that we'll probably have problems getting jhenna to leave the animal alone.
still, we think this might be a good route for taz. he really enjoyed being with the dogs last night and even worked a little bit with one of debra's fully trained animals (not trained for autistics specifically, but fully obedience trained). the program looks good, so let's hope we can get this all worked out. :)
