Loving & living with a special needs child

9.25.2002

I've made two trips to Taz's school this week. On Monday, they asked that I bring him home, as he was being very disruptive. Since there are no problems at home, in church, or with his respite care worker, it makes me wonder what's going on at school. Well, he had a substitute; understandable, as Taz doesn't handle changes in his routine that well. They haven't been doing his brushing. However, the sub has an autistic son herself, so she knows all about this. In the end, I took him home. As he had group Occupational Therapy that afternoon, this worked out okay. Yesterday, they called me again. So I went in and talked with the principal, the sub, and Taz. Taz apparently bit the sub, threw a chair at her, and told her to f__k off. We're not certain what set him off. He has gained 10 pounds since August, when his medication changed. His pants probably feel tight on him. I did say that physically restraining him sometimes helps calm him down; not always, as the sub was bit while she was holding him. I also brought in some sugarless candy. When all else fails, bribe him! Taz apologized to the teacher, and went back to class. I'll wait and see what happens today.
