Today, I took Taz in to see his behavioral pediatrician. We managed to get some things done. Dr Leong wrote an order for a nutritional consult; Taz is 10 years old, about 50" tall, and only weighs 48 pounds. We were thinking of prescribing an appetite stimulant for him. The one that I have experience with--Megace--apparently the good doctor didn't know. When she looked it up in the PDR (Physician's Desk Reference), she said it was a hormone! We don't want that! So, we went on another tack. Since his Concerta is more than likely responsible for supressing his appetite, she changed him over to Risperdal. He'll take 0.5mg in the evening for a week, increasing to 1mg if necessary. As is the case when there's a major med change, Taz had to give up some blood, and get an EKG. This is because Concerta is a stimulant, basically industrial strength Ritalin, while Risperdal is an anti-depressant. Actually, I think it's an anti-psychotic. Now, don't let these scare you. Medications of one classification are often used for other reasons. Take Tegretol and Depakote, for instance. Both are used as either anti-seizure, or anti-psychotic medications. I, myself, took an anti-gout medication for awhile, because it also increased the effectiveness of the antibiotic I was taking. But I digress. Taz went to the lab to get his blood drawn, and handled it like a trooper! He knew the deal right away. He sat in the chair, stuck out his right arm, and DARED the phlebotomist to stick him! He yelped a bit when he got stuck, but watched the whole procedure. I guess he has a greater tolerance to pain in that respect--although he certainly can't handle earaches. Dr Leong wants to see him in 2 months instead of 3, due to the medication change.

taz is 10. TEN! double digits and adolescence around the corner. scary scary thought.
he's been excited about his birthday for WEEKS. it finally gets here and he only eats 2 tacos, which were made for him because he LOVES tacos. either he was saving room for the cake (which he ate 2 pieces of) or he had something for lunch earlier that was pretty filling or a bit of both. it is kind of interesting that he may have been saving room for cake. if that was the case, even a little bit, it's an astonishing leap forward for him. he's not really been prone to planning anything, although he is pretty rigid when it comes to his schedule, he's never actually "planned" anything before. i'll have to keep an eye on him and see if he does it again.
and, speaking of schedules, tomorrow we get to break his school schedule. school seems to be the one thing he settles into pretty quickly. but, tomorrow we're taking him to buy some clothes with the money his grandparents gave us for him and a bit of our own.
this is going to be fun. the boy is 10 years old and could wear size 2Ts or 3Ts if he weren't so tall. he's incredibly difficult to fit. and it gets worse every year because of his finicky appetite and our lack of money. :(
