Loving & living with a special needs child

8.4.2001

Yesterday was Kristav's 9th birthday, so I took him out to dinner at Chuck E Cheese's. He had a lot of fun. We played some games together. A couple that he liked were similar to what he plays on Playstation: a snowmobile race and a jetski race. The jetski was really cool; you can actually lean into it. I also played some thay gave out tickets for prizes. WE got a total of 165 tickets; that gave him a little football, and some silly handclapping thing. He also rode this one thing that took his picture with the Chucker. I scanned it over to Domynoe; I imagine she'll post it soon.

You think what I wrote last irked me? Well, this next one just chaps my hide, to borrow a line from a commercial. I took Kristav this morning to see Dr Leong. He was supposed to have seen her on June 5, but had surgery that day. Well, we were there for over an hour, and she never showed. The nurse paged her several times, even called her house; she was told the doctor went to the dentist. So his appt has been rescheduled for August 16. If Dr Leong doesn't show then, I'm having his case transferred to someone else.

I got a little irked at something when the kids and I were at church. After the end of the last worship session/sermon, I went downstairs to collect my children. I found Kristav with the kindergarteners, spinning away. When I asked the teacher why he was always there, she asked where he was supposed to be. "3rd grade," I said. She seemed greatly surprised at this. I then asked the children's pastor about this, because I wanted Kristav in the same class as his younger sister, who is in 2nd grade. She said she thought having them in separate classes would be better. I said, "I know he's disabled and developmentally delayed, but having him with the kindergarteners is a little inappropriate." Of course, Kristav doesn't seem to mind; hell, he might even prefer it. But I think (and I might be wrong) it's in his best interests to keep Kristav with children the same age as him.
