Kristav learned to spell 5 words (well 2 of them are actually TV series titles) . They are Walker Texas Ranger, Jag, bed, mattress, and Pillsbury.

from an article on autism printed 2/2000: it looks like the damage that causes autism occurs within the first 3 weeks of pregnancy, and it looks like it comes from some kind of injury affecting the brain stem. with news like this comes the hope of finding a cause yet. autism has so much mystery attached to the "why" of it that any clue, any lead, is, in its own way, profound.
they have also noted that there may be new, easier ways to diagnose autistics. autistic symptoms show before a child is 3 years old, yet most doctors are so cautious in diagnosing it that most kids don't get diagnosed until way later (my son was almost 5 before being diagnosed with any disabilities at all, and wasn't until he was almost 7 that austism finally came into the picture). early diagnoses gives a kid a better chance of over coming these kinds of difficulties, yet doctors wait because it is so hard.
well, now there is a study that consistently shows that while children as young as 3-4 months old, and even animals, will shift their eyes/focus to look at a new stimulus (while the old one is present), autistics continue to look at the old stimulus.
this is all new stuff to me, and i think it gives some wonderful hope in the future, not only in treatment but also in making sure kids get diagnosed early enough to make a huge impact on their development.
