Loving & living with a special needs child

kristav off meds...aye yaie yaie. we tried that by accident ONCE and it is NOT something i want to experience again.... ug. but the surgery is important. he gets too many dang ear infections, the poor kid, and we're hoping the tubes will help drain them and reduce the number of infections. but we noticed that without the ritalin he's just psycho - out of control, irritable, temper tantrums come back and he climbs just about anything possible. i am not one who really likes medication - i take more than my fair share and hate to put my kids on them. but this lil guy NEEDS his meds for his sanity and ours and that is all there is to it. the ritalin helps him focus, keeps him from climbing the walls and greatly reduces the tantrums, and the other seems to be helping him get to sleep by midnight rather than between 2:30 and 4:30 a.m. he's getting up earlier, but he doesn't bounce out of bed right away so that's not as huge a deal as going to bed so late. and this means i can actually go to sleep at 2 a.m. and not be worried about him going out of his room and getting into things.

someone else has suggested looking into concerta rather than ritalin and i may just ask dad about it..we'll see.

Just a small note here. Yesterday I took Kitten, Kristav's older sister, to see Dr Leong, and determine if she is also ADHD (probably not, but Dr Leong is not ruling out ADD). While there, I remembered to mention Kristav's insomnia (his spinning into the wee hours) She said to give him 1/2 to 1 tablet of Clonidine (0.05-0.1 mg) at bedtime. I also mentioned his upcoming surgery (otic tube placement), and she said to hold his Ritalin for 48 hours prior, and the Clonidine for 1 week prior. The school nurse was informed, so now everyone is happy. Maybe not Domynoe; I mean, that's 2 days he won't be getting ANY medications.

kristav usually recites things he hears from t.v. or the radio; such as "Radio Disney", "On Sci-Fi", "NBC channel four.", "Walker Texas Ranger on USA", and so on. these become things that we constantly hear. well today he said something that took us all suprise; "1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4 Gimme a break, gimme a break, break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar." just a little something that got us all to laugh for a while.
