Loving & living with a special needs child

4.14.2001

Back on April 2nd, I took Kristav to see Dr Leong, the pediatrician who monitors his behavior. Kristav, at that time, had been taking 10mg of Ritalin each morning. This was his periodic checkup. When we got there, Kristav was doing his usual self-stimulation: humming and spinning. He also threw a new thing in, by concentrating on his reflection in the mirror. Do you recall the rock opera, "Tommy", created some 30 years ago by The Who? Tommy would do that, completely tune out all exterior stimuli except for his reflection in the mirror. Makes you wonder if Tommy was autistic, too.

Well, Dr Leong continued Kristav on his current dosage of Ritalin, and added Clonidine 0.05mg. This is for his impulsive behavior. I have patients at work who use this for their blood pressure. That's not unusual: Rogaine is actually an anti-hypertensive; the hair growth is a side-effect. She also put in a referral for Occupational Therapy, to help with his fine motor skills, which are still quite poor. OT can also help with his behavior. She will see him again in two months.

Well, on April 8th, I wound up taking Kristav back to the doctor, this time for Yet Another Ear Infection (please, God, let them add tubes). The doctor put him on Amoxicillin (the bubble-gum flavored liquid). I also discussed with him about Kristav's insomnia, which I had forgotten to mention to Dr Leong. I was wondering if anything could be given, since Kristav sometimes stays up until 2 or 3AM, happily spinning away. The only hypnotics (sleeping pills) that I have personal experience with are Ambien, Chloral Hydrate, and Restoril. The doctor said that Risperdal, an anti-psychotic, would do well in Kristav's case. He couldn't prescribe it, but said he would leave a note for Dr Leong to call us; I remember that Dr Leong mentioned using Risperdal if the Clonidine didn't work.
