Loving & living with a special needs child

3.8.2001

A couple days ago, Kristav learned how to spell 'Pillsbury'. He did it twice all by himself! Last night, when the electricity was gone, Kristav and I put on a concert themed from the 'Lion King'. For the most part, he was Zazu, Pumbaa, and the hyenas. I was Simba, Scar, Nala, and Timon. It was quite fun, and Kristav was having a good time.

I forgot to add: Kristav's teacher, 'Mister Bill', said he is retiring after the end of the school year. I believe Kristav has already met his probable replacement, so hopefully he won't freak out when The Change occurs.

This is my third attempt here. The last two times, my post went to Blog Hell. Last Thursday was a busy day in the life of my son, Kristav. First I had a meeting with his teacher, 'Mister Bill'. This is the parent-teacher conference they have at the end of each track. The elementary schools in many districts in California are on a year round basis: 3 months on, 1 month off. As there are four tracks, the schedules are staggered. Well, Kristav has been doing well. His sight word vocabulary has increased to 40, and he can do simple addition and subtraction with a calculator. His fine motor skills remain poor, so his handwriting still leaves room for improvement...but at least I can tell what he's writing! The odd thing is, his sister, Jewel, holds her pen in the same way Kristav does, and she writes just fine.
After that, Kristav had 2 doctor's appointments. The first was actually a hearing test with the audiologist. We sat in one soundproof booth, and she sat in another. She would say words in her microphone, and making them harder to hear. Kristav, with headphones on, would repeat the words he hears. This went fine, until Kristav went off on one of his tangents, involving either Burger King, Backstreet Boys, X-Men or FoxKids. I suppose it would be too much of me to ask that he go off on a Metallica tangent instead? Or Creed? Well, it could be worse: he could be humming 'In A Gadda Da Vida' while he's self-stimming. What the audiologist did, instead, was have Kristav put pegs in a pegboard when he hears a sound--thus, making a game of it. Kristav adapted very well, and he passed his test.
Then the doctor (the otolaryngologist, to be proper) examined Kristav--even used that big round mirror you always see them wear. He said there was no fluid behind the eardrum currently. He said he would examine his records from the pediatrician, and then determine if tube placement would be necessary. If so, then Kristav would be under general anesthesia for about 10 minutes, then in the hospital for 3 hours. Hopefully, that will curb his near-constant ear infections.
