Loving & living with a special needs child

1.16.2001

my daughter went out today to get kristav off the bus and the driver told her that she was writing up a referral and would let him on her bus any more. obviously, mama here freaked a bit. first i called his irc worker and she had me call transportation to find out what the deal was. basically i had confirmed that the district is required to provide transportation for the differently abled. the driver had no right to say what she did as drivers do not determine who rides their buses on the disabled student buses. they are welcome to write referrals, but only the principle can pull a kid from a bus. he will be on the bus home tomorrow.

it irks me though that these drivers do not seem to understand that the kids they are transporting ARE going to have problems. my son is autistic and has adhd. we are lucky that he is a high functioning autistic, but he is still autistic. i cannot tell him in the morning, "no spitting on the bus" and expect him to remember not to spit on the bus in the afternoon. his mind doesn't work that way. you'd think the school district would give the drivers some training in dealing with these special kids, and apparently they used to but don't now. regardless, it irks me that a driver thinks they can threaten a parent like this and think it will do any good. i think in this case the driver actually got herself in more hot water than my son is in.

he;s had good drivers in the past who seem to understand how to work with these kids. but the turnover seems really high and it seems he gets a new driver almost every quarter.

from kristav's daddy, sent into "prayer bytes" for jan. 13:

"My ex-wife and I took our son, Kristav, to the Kaiser hospital in Fontana today (1/11/01); he had an appointment to be seen by a metabolic specialist, on account of some abnormal lab values. My son, age 8, is autistic with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). At one time he was thought to be mildly to moderately mentally retarded, but that is no longer the case.

Anyway, nothing conclusive came up; some of the lab values were thought to be artifact in nature. Like, there was an abnormal level in his urine, but normal in his blood. Final result? Kristav Isaac Zane is a normal, healthy, autistic kid. When I took him back to school, he walked in the classroom and shouted, "I'M HERE!"

You can pray for my ex-wife, Denyse (she prefers Domynoe...it's an Internet thing), who is herself ADHD, as she continues caring for our son and 3 daughters. Pray for her current husband, Chris

For those interested in knowing more about autism, check out my son's website at http://domynoes.com/Kristav/bloggin/."

kristav has been doing that "I'M HERE!" at home too. it's a new development and actually kind of cute. it also is an indicator of his mood. he doesn't do it when he's not a happy camper. on another note, we have managed to cut out the whole snack thing with a minimum of fuss, thank goodness, and i am hoping he will eat more, at least of the food he likes.
