ok, i understand state rights. but in no way should STATE rights exceed OUR rights as citizens. once again, a state wishes to challenge a federal law concerning citizen rights..
"The Supreme Court will hear another disability discrimination case that calls into question the constitutionality of the ADA. Garrett is two consolidated employment discrimination cases filed against the state of Alabama--one involving a woman with breast cancer, the other involving a man with severe asthma. At issue is whether Congress had the constitutional authority under the Fourteenth Amendment to enact the ADA. Garrett is the latest in a series of cases in which states have challenged Congress' power to enact legislation regulating state conduct. ..... While Garrett only addresses the applicability of the ADA to the states, a bad decision could lead to the Supreme Court striking down parts of the ADA altogether. The states' rights brief in Garrett is due in early June; briefs supporting the ADA are due in early July. Ask your state to sign on to a brief supporting the constitutionality of the ADA." ----- The Friday Fax

tony's second day and he gets to see kristav's more difficult side. kristav likes the playstation. all he'll play is the hotwheels racing game, but chris and i figure using the controller is good practice for his fine motor skills as well as hand-eye coordination. plus he seems to have a good time at it. however, today i couldn't find the hotwheels disk. he started to tantrum when we told him he couldn't play. refused to budge, made that "i won't do it" noise he makes when he doesn't get what he wants. took us 10 minutes to get him to go upstairs and he was NOT happy. the good news: no screaming at the top of his lungs 3 hour knock down drag out throw things against the walls tantrum like he used to have.
thank goodness for the small blessings.

"His proposals follow weeks in which he steadily attacked the ideas of his Republican opponent, Gov. George W. Bush of Texas, who had laid out a centrist agenda on such issues as education, military policy and Social Security. Polls have shown the vice president's support slipping among many groups of voters.
Yesterday, Gore pledged that, if elected, he would seek to require that health insurers cover mental care for children on a par with other medical care. He also promised $2.5 billion over 10 years to ensure that states cover mental care for children in lower-income families that lack insurance. Maryland is among those states that already mandate such coverage. " -----SunSpot
THIS kind of nonsense is why we have problems with everything from education to protection issues. nothing is done until it becomes a political issue that can boost someone's chances of being elected. the government is REactive not PROactive and those who supposedly serve us and our nation serve no one but themselves. because of this it can be hard enough to get through life under normal circumstances, but if you have special circumstances (such as a differently-abled or mentally ill family member) it is even harder. unless you have a huge group lobbying and trying to get what you need, it will take ages to move even one small step foreward...and even then that step can vanish on the winds of political expediency. when will the government see that the needs of our children, differently-abled and otherwise, are a priority if we are to have a future thatwe can be proud of? i know, i know, don't hold my breath.

first i wish to apologize for being so quiet this weekend. all the kids were home monday and we bought bar-b-que on friday and bar-b-qued all weekend. i was busily helping with that, plus we had the new respite care worker (as mentioned below) AND i was trying to get some personal stuff done. today i am trying to get a few sets finished, so have just been busy!
second, i wish to welcome 2 of our new readers. i'm sorry it took me so long to get your link up rabi! and today i was contacted by brenda. thank you both for your warm letters!
the weekend was fairly quiet for the most part. tom was here saturday and monday, and we did have some difficulties with kristav's temper yesterday, which is very common when his schedule is disrupted. in this case, tom was new, was here on monday and saturday, and he didn't go to school on monday because of the holiday. i am surprised we didn't have problems all weekend! but tom took him outside and they played ball and tom pushed/dragged kristav around on the skateboard we got him just for that purpose (he sits, the worker pushes or pulls...honest, he LOVES it!). all the kids also had fun getting wet on friday with a new swirly sprinkler thing we got for the summer, even kristav enjoyed it.
back to work on some sets. hopefully i will be able to get some reading done a bit later when i take a break :)

kristav seemed ok with having a new "friend", a young man named tom. they seemed to get along well. because his last respite care worker had only worked a total of 13 of our alotted 24 hours for the month, tom will be back on monday to make up the remaining 5 hours of the month. we also went out and bought some summer toys, a couple of anytime things like one of those swirling water sprinkles, and a few things just for kristav when his respite worker is here. if we keep them from being played with any other time hopefully they won't get torn up as quickly.
no major reading for today. tomorrow we will bar-b-que so i may not post. hopefully i will be back with something more on monday.
